on another note (lol whats up dawgs)

Its still going to be in a 4:3 aspect ratio (or whatever 640x480 is) and they are going to add black bars on both sides of the screen to get the full 1920 width but im guessing it will have full 1080p on the vertical. so its going to be like what? 640x1080p?

im really having a hard time trying to figure out how the resolution is going to work on this "HD Remaster" because usually videos are a full 1920x1080 not just like 1080....
i am very hated on many forums even this one LOL

Well, for starters they are doing the remaster from the original 35mm film negatives, so even though the ratio will be 4:3, they can use any resolution they want (most likely 1440 x 1080). As you rightly pointed out, they will be adding black bars to the left and right of the picture, to get the full 1920 x 1080.

someone posted these links at BCC but ill post them here as well...

Ex Astris Scientia did some comparisons:
Quote
Here are some observations about sets, props and visual effects in TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint" without a specific theme, and a comparison of the original TV release (TNG, 1987) with the remastered episode (TNG-R, 2012).

That's what I did, quality is pretty amazing, certainly a lot better than the DVDs. Just a pity they're starting with the first season, easily the worst in TNG.

Yeah man, its amazing how good it looks, even encounter at farpoint had me scratching my head the entire time going wow. I really hope they do it to DS9 as well, it would be incredible to see the battle scenes remade. Voyager would be cool too.. But i mean lets face it DS9 is clearly superior  :P

Unfortunatley, as I believe was said earlier in this thread, DS9 and Voyager were shot on tape, not film, which means there's nothing to restore from. The tape automatically capped the quality and size by it's very nature. It sucks royally, but there's nothing you can do.

If It's one thing I've learned in life it's never say never... They said they would never release TNG on bluray and sure enough... I seriously doubt they taped either of those series. Anyway my point being is anything is possible. Also after looking into how the series was shot it turns out it was filmed the same as TNG.

It doesn't really matter if they shot DS9 on IMAX film, the market just isn't there to justify the cost of a full restoration. Remember that they've remade a lot of the FX shots, which is a tonne of money right there, and they've remastered the audio too. TNG has the audience to justify the cost, DS9 and Voyager don't. About the best we can hope for is a "best of" DS9 with some of the better episodes remastered (I'll take at least half of the 5th, 6th and 7th season episodes in a heart beat), but there's no way that they'd sell enough to justify a full restoration.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think it's gonna happen.
