Is this going to help or hinder development? How much does Paramount/CBS know about the game already?

Personally, I do hope it helps development and release by getting more people on-board to work on it!!!

Congrats on the feature...but like the guy b4 me hinted, shouldnt less publicity b better? I can see you guys running into problems with Star Trek Online as the only competition to them out there. And as many fans out there dont seem to like that game, they maybe tempted to play a more traditional but just as detailed Trek game like yours... Paramount may also start talk of legal BS in order to protect the franchise etc....

U guys need to keep this project on the DL as realistically possible IMO...

worst comes to the worst they can work on it in private. release a complete engine with boxes in space shooting beams at each other, then have someone "anonymously" release an ST mod for it.

As long as they don't make a profit from the game Paramount will leave them alone.

not true. All depends on the publisher. Capcom lets anyone and everyone make fan-made games so long as they don't make profit or claim it's their IP. Activision on the other hand shut down a King's Quest fan-game even though they plan to do nothing with the IP themselves. Microsoft let a fan-made Halo RTS progress, until they decided to make their own Halo RTS (Halo Wars), then they shut it down.

This is exactly what worries me.

I would find it such a shame if some legal a**e from Paramount/CBS gets a bee in their bonnet and orders Excalibur to shut down. I guess they could still finish off the game for themselves. But that would be a real blow for the rest of us who are looking forward to playing what (IMO) is shaping up to be the truest Star Trek game for years.

If anyone from the "Star Trek" brand wants to talk to us about the project we would be happy to hear from them, contact details are listed on the main website under "meet the team". In the meanwhile we will continue to develop Excalibur to showcase what we believe a Trek game should be all about.

Saw the article a day or two after I got my issue. Was kinda skimming through it when I saw constitution class ship, then im like woah what?  8)
Good stuff.

And about the whole Paramount deal. It seems they are letting New Voyages/Phase II keep going. They may be a little more flexible (is that the word im looking for?) with ST:E. Heres hoping anyway...

Funny that you should mention Phase II, because I posted something a little while ago there about having a section on their forum for Star Trek games, old and new, official and fan made. To my surprise they thought it was a good idea, and it is now there for all to see.

Perhaps the Excalibur team might want to take a look and even post something in it, if they think it is appropriate of course.

WOW!
I've been checking out all the vids & screenshots since learning of the existance of Excalibur through PC Gamer(and to think I wasn't going to renew my subscription!). All I can say is I seriously hope this comes to fruition. As a huge fan of Bridge Commander (called off sick the day it came out) and related mods I felt humbled that I missed this project.
From what I can see you folks are doing a terrific job. Keep up the great work & wtg getting into PC Gamer!!

as you get more famous expect a cease and desist letter from CBS.

especially if they think your game is going to be so good that it would compete directly with STO.

meh, too many unlicensed ST fan-games and mods out there to make it all that likely.

and even if they did, release a non-ST space game that consists of flying boxes attacking each other, then have an anonymous modder release a giant ST total conversion for it. Problem solved.

Ya there wont be a letter in my opinion.

#1 It would be stupid as it would cause the numerous fan projects to consider going elseware film and game.

#2 The engine seems to not be tied to Star Trek in any way in my opinion and is just as capable of being Star Wars Excalibur or Stargate Excalibur or whatever.

If it said mod, it was a mistake.  I think some people have a hard time comprehending that there are people out there willing and able to create a game from scratch so they assume mod.  Excalibur is a standalone/full game.
oh hai

They do refer to is as its own game several times:

The team behind the mod-turned game has developed its own tech...

and so on, I think they used the word "mod" to make it clear it isn't an official title.

So Star Trek Excaibur isn't the official name?

Yes it is. He meant it's not an official title (game).

Official title as in a "real" Star Trek game, from Paramount or the likes.

Even though Excalibur going to be better than anything Paramount has put out. :P
