Ship request
« on: January 24, 2010, 01:42:08 AM »
I actually have a suggestion for a ship. I would love to see DJ Curtis' Century class in the game, both because it is simply a beautiful ship and I think it would fit right in as a fresh idea along side the new Excalibur class.

I'd love to see DJ's 25th century ship-line he has released for Bridge Commander so far. I'm pretty sure he will release them for Excalibur as well. His ships presents a more logical design line cpmpared to Star Trek Online ships.

Well all you really need to take ion consideration is.....If its been made for Bridgecommander it can be converted to STExcalibur.
I've tried converting the century class for the model viewer but it didn't work :( but i got DJ's valient working

But I thought BC didn't support bumpmaps and other stuff like that?, so to make it good for Excalibur standards it would need a little tweaking.

Aye that is true, i made the normal maps for the valients, its a simple process wich takes a minute per texture at most. But it only looks good if the normal map textures are quite big. Detail maps aren't part of the viewer but thery are one texture mapped all over

I SOOOO second this!
His ships are way more reasonable as successors than STO.
Plus they look just look anyway.

If there had to be one ship from DJ Curtis it would be the Athena Class

STO's philosophy seems to be to take existing ships rearrange some bits, add some do-dads, (poorly) rescuplt this, reshape that, and call it a new ship; and all done through the horendous lens of the Trek 09 design asthetic. Curtis' ships are indeed the more plausible future for starship design.

I like the second one the best by far.  Looks more intimidating.  The first one is not very convincing.

The second one is obviously better looking but STO has done one thing that is wonderful. Their ship customization system as actually surprisingly good. The only things that would make it better are more components. The reason they keep the quality low is because you generally can't get close up views of the ships, except your own.

So has STO just ripped off DJ's Valient class - or was it from the series anyway?

This design never appeared in th show, so either STO crew made that up themselves and it coincidentially looks like DJs Valiant, or they really just ripped his one off (and I tend to the latter, knowing that the official crews often rip off fan-made material).

I know you want to view STO as a souless cash-in besmirching the series and exploiting fans but that's really stretching it.

I'm not so sure STO stole ideas from Curtis. Their design acutally looks closer to the Defiant class, they just added some pointy things and changed the angles of the hull. DJ Curtis actually re-envisioned it and the Valiant looks like the Defiant class only in general form: low profile, broad, one piece hull, etc.

That being said, I actually don't find either particularly attractive, and I prefer the original Defiant class over both of these.

Two things:
1:I may sometimes sound harsh, but that is because I don't beat around the bush but say outright what I mean. I wasn't actually Thinking about them as besmirching the series, just as stealing some ideas.
2: Not just them. Go to scifi-meshes.dom and talk to some of the star-wars modelmakers. One made a fanbased design and it got ripped of by LucasArts of Force Unleashed.

I think I remember that, but STO's above Defiant variant is very close to the original and quite different from the fan design below it.

try playing it. It's SFC3 in a slightly more filled out universe.

Or, a not-buggy-as-hell Star Trek Legacy with decent enough space controls. If they could make ground combat fun, and introduce proper stories, it could be a good game, if not great.
