In Bridge Commander this was done using a third party program called Game Commander. You can theoretically play any game using it. It didn't work too well, and in fact it was pretty shoddy at best. Creating a reliable way of using voice commands takes time and patience. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is far from priority for the STExcalibur team.

You are absolutely correct. If anything like this was to occur, it would be looked into near the end of development (as it would build on top of what is already there)...it is not essential for the game.

As far as I am aware there are no plans to include voice command. That said, as far as I know it has not been ruled out. However, if it is implemented it would most likely use some 3rd party software (but as we're not getting paid for any of this, I doubt it will ever happen...we probably won't be able to afford it :()

But like I said you never know what will happen  :?

Yeah I do 8), but it is still early stages (as far as game-play development goes), so nothing is concrete yet...or concrete enough for me to divulge details. As soon as something is concrete, be assured you will all find out about it :)

However, there maybe someone else who can shed light on your question (with respect to the current intended final outcome).

Unless a lot of time and effort goes into this concept, I see it being more of a gimmick than anything else.  Considering that there may be only a few voice commands with the potential that even those will not work consistently, I would much rather hit a key on my keyboard or mouse for something time-sensitive like a "red alert" or a "come-about" command.  It would be awesome if it gets pulled off correctly, but I don't see it being nearly as important as some of the other elements in the game.
oh hai

This is the general consensus among the project members at the moment.

You are correct, there are plenty of other things to do before this is really considered. But rest assured that if it is implemented it won't be "half-arsed". I have heard a lot of complaints about BC's voice command system...this won't happen with us.

Besides, most projects (games you buy...that are made by companies etc.) have time constraints and budget constraints that affect the time even more  :?
That's where Excalibur beats all, we have no proper time constraints so it will be released  :whenitsdone

Just to clarify my point; if we look into doing something, start doing it or even finish it and it is not up to scratch, then it won't be put in the final release. For example, we don't want a voice command system that not every one can use, or diminishes the enjoyability of the game. Just for arguments sake, if it does get looked into properly in the future then I can comfortably say that it would be an optional interaction method...so you don't have to talk to your monitor(s) all of the time :D

Sorry for the necro-post but I didn't want to start a new topic for something that has already been discussed.

First off I would like to say bravo to the Devs for what appears to be a truly magnificent looking game. I cannot wait for this to come out.

On the subject of voice commands however; I am very surprised that the community isn't backing this, as it seems to me the very essence of Star Treks computer system is based on voice interaction. I felt that when the technology became available, this would absolutely bring a extreme added level of immersion and depth into the world we are all so eager to interact with.  I see it as being far from a gimmick, if nothing else almost a necessity to fully complete the Star Trek experience.

I believe Scotty said it best: "A keyboard.... How quaint." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9kTVZiJ3Uc&feature=related

As far as the technology it seems from every report that the Xbox Kinect has brought this to very usable standards. Not to mention my Iphone has impressed on this front as well.

Now I am by no means suggesting anybody go out of their way to make this a priority, it just surprises me that so many people are so down on the idea, considering its absolute base in the source material. Not to mention the fact that I think most of the perception of the technology is frankly.... extremely dated.

Anyway I am no programmer, so I hope someone else will take up this mantle in the form of a mod. I just see no reason, or excuse why this wouldn't be the ultimate goal for interaction.

Imagine how amazing it would be to speak these words aloud: "Ensign, lay in a course for system X, Warp 9, engage." And then have your ship warp off into the sunset... I would think that would be the ultimate goal of a Star Trek based game, and not seen as a mere... Gimmick.

My apologizes for my first post being so opinionated, this just got me fired up!!!

Edit* I just realized this thread is from 2009..... My bad on the outdated tech comment. It wasn't outdated at the time.
