Star Trek Online | Excalibur Class - Is ours better?!
« on: May 30, 2009, 04:29:46 PM »
Cryptic Studios have posted an update showing their "Excalibur Class" starship.

 I think ours is better.

 Here is theirs: (http://www.startrekonline.com/ships/excalibur)

 and ours:

PC Specs: AMD Phenom II X4 940 3GHz, 6gb DDR2 Ram, XFX 9800GTX 1gb Black Edition, 2tb Internal HDDs (2 x 500gb SATA, 1x1tb SATA, Plus 1tb External HDDs), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

Online version is a joke  Doesn't seem to be a top of the line explorer or battleship, it almost like a refited century old ship like the ambassador. LC's version will kick ass!!!

I don't think comparisons are necessary. Their Excalibur is obviously a ship of a different class and purpose then our own. That said, theirs looks like a revamped ambassador with bashed tng post tng components from several classes, while our Excalibur is a much more original design. There's a always a visible difference when you do something just because it pays the rent, and when you do something because you love doing it.

"Updating the iconic profile of the Constitution class, the Excalibur is the first of a group of new, state-of-the-art cruisers intended to fill a variety of roles for Starfleet."

Problem solved. A 24th century Constitution Class. Overall not a bad looking ship... but it's no Excalibur.

Star Trek Online has much how should I put it "strange" ship designs, this one isn't that bad compaired to some ships from the trailer, etc. but Excalibur isn't a name this new constitution design should have.

I don't think there's a problem with their version. It's just a different ship for different purposes. And ours is more original and overall nicer :)

That's the point "more original and overall nicer" and that is why I like it so much!

Well, the original name excalibur was used for a Ambassador Class, so i think it makes some sense to have a revamped ambassador to use the name.
I don`t consider it a bad ship by the thumbnail, but it's surely different indeed.
For what i heard ST:O is based on the prequel comic for XI so the whole universe is different and that explains why so unfamiliar designs are visible (TBH i don`t like the visual overall, but that's just me).

Our ship is made to be the most important i the game, not one nice into a game that tries to make all of then important in a certain way (all MMOs do), so it's reasonable that ours get a lot more attention.
That also explains why you guys had only a intel shot of the new model, not wip renders :P
Ship itself is a lot different than the 0.9 you guys are used to, which is based on Steven Davis design.

It's nice that ST:O is set in JJverse, that way it doesn't contradict with our Excalibur (and other things). So you get the best of both worlds..

Its NOT set in the JJ-Verse.  Its set in the prime timeline and its not affect by the events in the JJ-Verse.  Countdown was set in the prime timeline too, right up until Nero went back in time, then it becomes the JJ-Verse.  But I do not want this thread to descend into another STXI discussion, I was just correcting this misconception.

well Spock disappears from the prime universe around a decade after nemesis, so STO has to fit around the back story of the new film. Needless to say we will be steering well clear of all that stuff for the sake of keeping things simple.

I completely agree. There's is just a big joke. They should've had you guys do the starship design.

These quotes are just a bit harsh....

The ship looks like a heavily refitted Constitution Class and isn't anything I would call un-pretty.

The original Constitution Class is indeed quite beautiful.  It follows that any of it's derivatives would look good, too.

I think the problem is that Excalibur doesn't look much like a ship that would really have ever have made it off a sketch board at the ASDB....

The feeling that Starfleet would have spent anymore than 10 seconds considering a proposal for a ship like that, especially after c.2330 or 2335, just doesn't exist with that render....All the really good models look contemporary to their vintage and look like something you would imagine Starfleet wanted for one reason or other.....

No one can lay faint praise (or light criticism) like that the feet of what the Dev Team is doing here.  The real Excalibur Class is being done on this domain.  It's awesome on another level of the meaning of the word "awesome"

And yes! It really, really looks like the type of ship Starfleet would want to put into interstellar space in or around the mid-2380's

That's my $1.36 on the matter

dont get me wrong, i dont mean to trash the ship or seem so very negative...  it is a cool looking ship indeed (one i would definitely include in my ships list, if there was one for BC)...
but STE's Excalibur vs that Excalibur, well STE's wins hands-down IMO lol :P  :)

I prefer the ST:O ship more. I don't know if it should be named Excalibur or not, but I like the ship.

Don't know, I think most of the ships in STO look quite uncanon.
The look more like "common" futuristic starships and less like Star-Trek spaceships.
Way to overstuffed and colorful.
Needless to say I prefer the STE ships by far.

Guys, two things to remember:

1) Both STE's Excalibur and the STO version are uncanon designs, so there's no real basis for comparison. If you ask me, both are well designed for different purposes. To those of you trashing the STO team for their work, you are doing nothing but dumping on people who are doing their passion (guess what, the STO guys love Star Trek). To those stating that it's just a rehash of a classic design, what about popular BC models like the Gagarin that are the same concept?

2) All STO designs should be taken with a grain of salt considering the completely massive and near endless options for customization present in their game. I think the STO Excalibur is beautiful and probably the only ship that would get me out of the Excelsior class. Certainly something to work for. And the rule of thumb for STO is that if you don't like how your ship looks, change it.

There is no need for competition here. I think both teams have done great jobs. The STO Ex in particular is a beautiful ship worthy of it's name lineage.

To be completely honest, I'm not a fan of the novel type Excalibur design (just way too massive and flat-formed) but the models done of it do it justice.
